Batik Tanah community at Lembah Bujang

Batik Tanah Lembah Bujang

Batik Tanah Lembah Bujang is a community initiative in Kedah that reinvents batik making through the unique art of clay-based batik, inspired by the rich heritage and biodiversity of Ancient Kedah. Once a thriving trading hub over 2,000 years ago, Lembah Bujang is home to priceless geo-archaeological, historical, and cultural treasures, from ancient rock formations to natural landscapes now protected within Jerai Geopark. Blending these elements into contemporary yet locally rooted designs, and guided by Universiti Utara Malaysia, the project empowers the community through culture, creativity, and heritage craftsmanship.

As part of the Batik Tanah Lembah Bujang initiative, the project has:

Hands-on workshops are organized in local communities, combining traditional dyeing with modern techniques to inspire creative entrepreneurship.

Through mentorship, branding workshops, and e-commerce readiness, marginalised groups are guided into sustainable microenterprise models.

By connecting artisans to physical and digital market, local tourism, event/fairs, and buyers, we foster sustainable income generation to the community.

Designs incorporate patterns, stories, ancient and natural motifs, and colors unique to Lembah Bujang.

The initiative has brought marginalised artisans and entrepreneurs from Lembah Bujang to events through KUSPEL and UUM.
